Thyristors are an extremely important family of semiconductor devices that, for many years, were the all-around ‘go-to’ devices for electronic circuit design. Since the introduction of the Transistor in 1947, the range of available devices altered very little until the late 60s and early 70s; only the range of application developed, as with the transistor. With the advent of microelectronics, the options grew exponentially - the first integrated circuit memory devices, the invention of the monolithic transistor, the development of the integrated circuit and even the Power MOSFET.
One such device developed during this period was the TRIAC (Triode for Alternating Current). Heralded as the major breakthrough in electrical semiconductor devices, the TRIAC enabled the switching of alternating current with a single device. One of the major advantages of the TRIAC is its ability to control and switch AC systems with just one device, something that was impossible using a transistor. When integrated into the appropriately named TRIAC circuit, the device was able to switch AC current without suffering from problems such as the uncontrolled ‘hunt’ or ‘ringing’ seen with transistor-based circuitry.
Of all the TRIACs available, the L2X5RP is one of the most commonly-used. The L2X5RP is a very low-cost, ultra miniature TRIAC which is designed for general purpose switching and phase control applications. The L2X5RP is a three-terminal device with a gate, main AC current and main DC voltage, and is typically capable of switching AC line voltages up to and including 400 volts, which makes it ideal for many applications. The device has a maximum gate current of 15mA and a maximum allowed peak off-state voltage of 600 volts. The repetitive off-state voltage is rated at 400 volts, and the AC and DC current ratings for the L2X5RP are both very high, with the AC rating at 4A and the DC rating at 8A.
The working principle of the L2X5RP is based on the ability of the device to control the current as it flows through two separate control elements. The two control elements form an electronic switch by controlling current through a silicon semiconductor. The switch is operated by applying a small but sufficient amount of gate current to the gate terminal of the device which, in turn, causes the two control elements to conduct and maximally switch the output current. The output current is controlled by the magnitude of the Gate current and will remain constant as long as the Gate current remains stable. The input voltage applied to the Gate terminal must not exceed the specified voltage level.
The L2X5RP is primarily used in applications where variable levels of current control are required. Typical applications include motor speed control, light dimmers, temperature controllers, positioners and power circuits where fast switching is essential. With its small yet robust design, the L2X5RP is ideal for any environment where size, cost and switching speed are of paramount importance.
