The thyristor, often referred to as a TRIAC, is a three terminal solid state semiconductor switch. It is the combination of two oppositely connected thyristors, so-called “back-to-back” thyristors, and is use to control current in both directions. TRIACs are used as a reliable switching device to get it operated in both directions.
The L2X8E6, a DC midget type TRIAC, is designed for prospective AC application and is principally intended for applications in the range of pulse steering, lighting and power control, detector control and second and third level protection control applications. It is suitable for use in dimensions that are equivalent to the standard medium power control equipment.
The L2X8E6 is designed to control alternating current through phase control and it has the ability to suppress EMI and save energy. It has an integrated gate structure and low gate current thresholds, making it a high performance switch. Additionally, it features a reliable design with a long operating life.
The operating range of the L2X8E6 spans from -50 to 150℃ and is available in two different versions: open stud for AC and DC circuits, and an embedded type for AC circuits. The TRIAC is rated at a peak current of 8A and, depending on the version, is available with various gate current ratings and lead length configurations, including an embedded package with a pin diameter of 1.5mm. The maximum of repetitive peak off-state voltage ranges from 400V to 1,200V and the on-state voltage ranges from 2V to 4V.
When connecting the L2X8E6 to a circuit, the user must take care to connect the ground terminal of the device to the anode terminal before connecting it to the circuit. The device is designed to operate at AC frequencies ranging from 50Hz to 400Hz with a typical delay time of around 3 mSec. The Gate Characteristic in these applications is across the total width of 150ns with full on in less than 10ns.
The working principle of the L2X8E6 TRIAC is based on controlling the switching of the current in both directions. It is achieved through the manipulation of the electric field, which is applied in the electric circuit to set the current direction.
