The L4960 is an integrated DC-DC switching regulator, classified as a Point of Load (POL) regulator module. It provides an integrated and efficient solution for a wide range of industrial and automotive applications, including switching power supplies, converters, current-source power supplies, and power over Ethernet (PoE) applications.
The L4960 utilizes a highly efficient, fixed-frequency, synchronous, step-down (or buck) regulation topology. This topology uses two switching transistors to convert and regulate an input voltage to a desired output voltage with a high degree of accuracy. When operating with an input voltage greater than the regulated output voltage, power is transferred from the input source to the output load via the two transistors. The integrated L4960 circuit regulates the output voltage and current using two main components, the feedback network and the control circuit.
The feedback network consists of two resistors and one sense capacitor. The two resistors are used to create a voltage divider, while the sense capacitor is used to filter out any higher frequency noise. This network provides the feedback signal to the control circuit, which then compares the feedback signal to an internally generated reference voltage. If the feedback voltage is greater than the reference voltage, then the control circuit will switch off the power transistors, effectively lowering the input voltage to the desired output voltage. Conversely, if the feedback voltage is less than the reference voltage, then the control circuit will switch on the power transistors, thus increasing the input voltage to the desired output voltage.
The L4960 is designed to operate in either a continuous-conduction or discontinuous-conduction (disc-cond) mode. In the continuous-conduction mode, the device behaves similarly to a classical DC-DC buck regulator, with the power transistors continuously conducting. However, in the discontinuous-conduction mode, the device behaves as a switched inductor type of regulator, with the power transistors switching on and off at a fixed frequency. This mode is typically used when the output current is lower than the regulation current threshold, or when the input-output voltage differential is lower than 2V.
The L4960 utilizes an integrated oscillator to control the switching frequency, which allows for flexibility and efficiency depending on the application. It also includes an integrated power MOSFET capable of handling up to 10A of current and an on-chip current sensing circuit for accurate current sensing and EMI reduction. The device also features various protection features such as overvoltage protection and cycle-by-cycle current limiting, as well as a soft-start circuit to protect against inrush current.
