A TRIAC is an acronym for a “Triode for Alternating Current.” It is a type of thyristor, the most common being the SCR, or silicon controlled rectifier. Thyristors are solid state switches that are used to control the current in a circuit. TRIACs are used in a wide variety of applications ranging from lighting control, heating, motor speed control, to power supplies and motor control.

The basic building block of a TRIAC is three semiconductor layers, each consisting of either a N-type or a P-type region. A TRIAC is a bistable switch, meaning it will stay in either the on or off position until a signal is received changing it back again. When a trigger current is applied at the gate of the TRIAC, it begins to conduct current across the main electrodes in the direction of the applied electric field.

A major difference between a TRIAC and other types of thyristors is that the TRIAC can conduct current in both directions. This is called bidirectional conduction. This makes the TRIAC ideal for a variety of applications which require variable speeds, phase control and pulse-width modulation. T he typical applications of TRIACs can be found in lighting control, heating and motor speed control. In lighting control, the TRIAC is used to dim fluorescent or incandescent lights. It is connected to a lamp or light bulb and a variable intensity control that allows the user to adjust the brightness of the lamp. The variable intensity control provides a variable resistance that can be adjusted to provide the desired intensity.

In heating applications, TRIACs are used to control the voltage used for heating elements. The TRIAC is connected to the heating element, and the voltage is adjusted by varying the resistance of the TRIAC. This allows the user to increase or reduce the heat of the element.

In motor speed control, TRIACs are used to adjust the speed of an AC motor. This is done by changing the frequency of the current applied to the motor. The speed can be adjusted by varying the resistance of the TRIAC. This allows the user to control the speed of the motor.

T he working principle of a TRIAC is similar to other thyristors. A small current is applied to a gate on the TRIAC, causing it to become conductive.
