Thyristors are solid-state power switching components that offer the ability to rapidly switch a large amount of current when triggered on by external control signals. TRIACs, which stands for TRIode for Alternating Current, are bidirectional thyristors that offer fast switching of both positive and negative current through a single device. The L4X5RP is a family of TRIACs optimized for fast switching applications, offering superior high-speed triggering performance. The L4X5RP family is available in a range of current ratings from 2A to 16A and is comprised of both surface-mount and through-hole packages, allowing a wide range of system design flexibility. The devices feature an embedded gate structure and STMicroelectronics’ proprietary SO2 junction technology, delivering superior dynamic performance, especially at high temperatures. The key feature of the L4X5RP family is its low-energy triggering performance of ~400µJ typical.\' This allows power switching applications to operate at significantly faster response times with less heat being generated from the device, making them extremely beneficial for applications such as motor control, motor starters, power conversion, temperature controllers, and other applications where fast switching is required.In applications such as motor control, the L4X5RP family allows for the TRIAC to be triggered faster than conventional TRIACs, thereby decreasing the amount of overlap time between the current conduction and the phase shifting, greatly improving the power efficiency.The L4X5RP family of TRIACs also features an embedded gate driver, which allows for a compact system design since the microcontroller or other external gate driver circuitry is no longer needed.The working principle of the L4X5RP family is based on the standard TRIAC principle; two PN junction diodes connected in series and back-to-back. When a signal is applied to the Gate Terminal of an L4X5RP, the device is turned ‘on’ and a current is allowed to pass through the anode and cathode terminals. As the current increases, the voltage drop across the device increases, causing the device to reach its ‘);on-state’.Once the device is in its on-state, current can continue to flow until the voltage drop across the device drops below a certain threshold. At this point, the device is turned ‘off’ and the current is stopped. The L4X5RP family offers a range of benefits for fast switching applications, offering superior high-speed triggering performance and a range of package options for a wide range of systems. Furthermore, the embedded gate driver and low-energy triggering performance make it ideal for applications where fast switching is needed, such as motor control and power conversion.
