Thyristors - TRIACs
A TRIAC (triode for alternating current) is a type of thyristor, which is a semiconductor device that is essentially a current-operated switch, or in other words, a solid-state version of an electromechanical relay. The device consists of three terminals, or closely spaced semiconductors, with the characteristics of a plate, a grid and a cathode, that control the flow of current when the proper voltage is applied.TRIACs are commonly used to control the current flow in AC circuits, such as in fan speeds, light dimmers and air conditioning systems, making them extremely popular in consumer electronics. The device is commonly used as a “switch” to control the supply of power to these electro-mechanical loads, such as fans, HVAC equipment and lighting fixtures.The L4X8E8RP application relies on the TRIAC device in order to trigger and control the current flow in the circuit. The TRIAC itself works by allowing current flow in both directions (when applicable, depending on the type of circuit being used) and across both poles of the AC line. When triggered, the device will conduct current in both directions. This is done by allowing the positive and negative half-cycles of the AC current to be controlled independently, thus enabling precision control of power flow to the load.When the load, or part of the AC circuit, is not being used, the TRIAC acts as an efficient blocking, preventing any additional current from flowing. This is one of the main benefits of using the TRIAC, since it allows the user to precisely control exactly how much power is being used in the circuit at any given time.In order to trigger the TRIAC and control the current flow, a L4X8E8RP application uses a pulsed logic signal. The logic signal comes in the form of a zero-cross detection signal, which is then used to control the device. This is done by detecting the negative zero-cross of the AC voltage.The TRIAC is triggered and allowed to pass current in one of two possible directions (depending on the application), by two independent pulse width modulation inputs (pWM). Any change to the input pulse signals will control the higher and lower portion of each AC half-cycle, thus allowing exact current control.The L4X8E8RP application is a common example of one of the many ways that the TRIAC device can be used in a circuit. Using a special type of pulse technology, this application allows the user to precisely control and trigger a TRIAC device in exact periods of time, making it an ideal solution for a variety of electro-mechanical applications.
