L5300EPTTR Application Field and Working Principle

L5300EPTTR is a high performance low power Voltage Regulator in the Linear Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMIC - Linear) series of STMicroelectronics. This device is specifically designed to be used in Automotive and Industrial applications, such as LED illumination, motor control, intelligent sensors and more.

L5300EPTTR is based on a ultra-low dropout voltage regulator (ULDOR) which works at near-zero input and output voltage for improved system reliability and performance. This device features extremely low quiescent current and excellent output voltage accuracy, enabling effective power saving and thermal management. The main features of L5300EPTTR are as follows:

  • External programmable operating range: 2.2V to 5.5V input voltage, 0.6V to 3.6V output voltage.

It is a highly configurable device which includes a voltage regulation loop that can be programmed to achieve a wide range of positive and negative voltage output levels with very high accuracy. As shown in the diagram below, the input of the device is the external voltage source and the output is the regulated voltage. The voltage regulation loop consists of two main components: an error amplifier and a pass element. The error amplifier measures the output voltage and compares it with the reference voltage. If the output voltage is higher than the reference voltage, the amplifier will reduce the base voltage of the pass element. If the output voltage is lower than the reference voltage, the amplifier will increase the base voltage of the pass element to improve output voltage accuracy.

The pass element of the circuit is a power transistor which is used to control the power flow from the input to the output. It adjusts the voltage output based on the signal from the error amplifier. The pass element can be either a MOSFET or a bipolar transistor, depending on the application. The last component of the voltage regulation loop is the feedback or compensation network, which is used to adjust the gain of the error amplifier and reduce noise at the output. The compensation network is connected to the junction between the pass element and the output.

The thermal shutdown feature prevents the device from overheating and damaging the load by shutting down the device when the junction temperature exceeds a certain threshold. Finally, the short-circuit protection feature protects the device from damage due to an unexpected short-circuit between the input and output.
