DC-DC switching regulators are useful devices for balancing output voltage in power management applications. The L6712D is a high efficiency, DC-DC switching controller that is designed for use in apps that require an adjustable output voltage in the range of 4V to 24V. It features an onboard voltage feedback loop and is based on a hysteretic architecture, which allows for excellent performance in terms of line, load, and temperature regulation. The L6712D architecture consists of two main components - a buck converter and a synchronous rectifier - connected in series to form a complete power stage. The synchronous rectifier then works to reduce power losses when the input voltage is lower than the output voltage.

The L6712D features a hysteretic architecture which combines the buck and synchronous rectifier at their optimal points of operation. It does this using a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) and two comparators. The VCO is used to generate a sawtooth waveform which is compared by the two comparators to determine when to switch the buck and synchronous rectifier on and off. When the sawtooth waveform is lower than the feedback voltage (VFB), the buck is switched on while the synchronous rectifier is switched off. Similarly, when the VCO is higher than the VFB, the synchronous rectifier is switched on while the buck is switched off. The hysteretic architecture ensures the buck and synchronous rectifier are always working at the optimal points of operation, resulting in higher efficiency and better performance.

The L6712D also features protection features such as overcurrent protection (OCP) and over voltage protection (OVP). The OCPfeature monitors the output current and cuts off the power if it exceeds the limit of the device. The OVP feature monitors the output voltage and trips if it exceeds the programmed limit. In addition, the L6712D has a low standby current feature which allows the device to enter a low power “sleep” mode in order to reduce the quiescent current draw and improve efficiency.
