The L6986F is a versatile 3 MHz monolithic switching regulator dedicated to the regulation of positive output voltages up to 24 V. It provides good electrical performance over a wide range of line and load conditions, making it suitable for a variety of applications such as distributed power supplies, line driver/ receiver equipment, circuit protection and load control systems.

This voltage regulator belongs to the DC DC Switching Regulators group of Power Management ICs (PMIC), which provide efficient and robust power conversion solutions while keeping the number of components to a minimum. These components convert the DC input supply to the required DC output either by switching (switching regulator) or linear regulation (linear regulator). They are used for a wide range of operations to provide regulation, monitoring and control in industrial, automotive and consumer applications, such as controlling the voltage of the battery of an automotive or providing a regulated output voltage from a lower voltage DC rail or from an AC/DC power supply adapter.

The L6986F operates in the step-down mode and works by providing the voltage conversion from the input to the output, thus protecting the load from overvoltage, undervoltage, overcurrent or over-temperature conditions. The regulator consists of an input rectifier, a logging-shunt regulator and PWM-regulated output switch. It also integrates a soft-start circuit which automatically brings the output voltage to the nominal set value in a controlled manner.

At the input, the rectifier converts the voltage to a DC signal, which is then compared to the reference voltage, generated by an internal bandgap reference source. If the input voltage exceeds the set value, the power switch conducts until the voltage is regulated. When the input voltage is lower than the set value, the power switch opens, thus diminishing the current load.

The logging-shunt regulator is used to sense the current flowing through the load and it also controls the on-time and off-time of the switch to achieve a constant output voltage. When the current draw of the load is low, the off-time of the switch is increased and the output voltage rises above the set value. Conversely, if the load draw is high, the on-time is increased to reduce the output voltage and maintain the set value.

The internal soft-start feature of the regulator starts the transition of the output voltage from zero to the nominal set value in a controlled manner and limits the inrush current at power-up. The power switch is then enabled and disabled to regulate the output voltage indefinitely.

The L6986F limits the current flow through the power switch, protecting it from overloading, as well as ensuring the output voltage stability and providing a safe operating environment for devices connected to the load. The device also includes two digital inputs and two open-drain outputs to provide complete load control capability.

Also, the built-in programmable overload protection circuit monitors the output current and protects the device in case the output current exceeds the threshold. The Trip Time is programmable via an external resistor and the device provides an Overtemperature protection with an adjustable threshold via a NTC thermistor.

The advantage of the L6986F is its higher efficiency and power handling capability, which can be used to provide a well-regulated output voltage in a wide range of power system applications.
