The L6995DTR is a monolithic synchronous buck regulator power switch controller. Developed by STMicroelectronics, it is a highly advanced dc/dc cost-effective solution for microprocessor voltage regulators. It is optimized for low-cost applications with high-frequency and high efficiency features. Generally speaking, its most noteworthy features are: 2A/3A peak current, 2.25MHz fixed-frequency PWM synchronous buck controller, integrated high-side, low-side MOSFETs, low RDS(on) current, and programmable over-current protection (OCP) features, as well as additional temperature protection.
When it comes to the L6995DTR application field, it’s commonly used in microprocessor voltage regulators, DC/DC converters, and other low-power and low-voltage applications. The main working principles of the device contain the following parts: (1) synchronous rectification and power conversion; (2) programmed output current limiting protection; and (3) over-temperature protection.
Starting with the power conversion, it is the core of the PMIC architecture. The L6995DTR uses a synchronous rectification buck topology to provide high efficiency power conversion. At the output of the switcher, the secondary rectifier prevents the output voltage from reaching excessively high levels and further improves the efficiency.
On the other hand, the programmed output current limiting protection is designed for the PMIC to protect the output voltage from dropping below certain values due to excessive current caused by either external loads or other factors. It is based on the voltage drop sensed across the current sensing resistor to enable the OCP and limit further current flowing through the device.
The over-temperature protection is generally based on the thermal sensing pins of the L6995DTR, thus refreshing the system and restarting it when the junction temperature rises to a certain level. However, this is a secondary protection, and should not be the only protection for the system.
At the end of the day, the L6995DTR is a great power switch controller for low-cost ultra-low power applications. It combines superb features, such as 2A/3A peak current, 2.25MHz fixed-frequency PWM synchronous buck controller, integrated high-side, low-side MOSFETs, low RDS(on) current, and programmable over-current protection to offer superb performance at an affordable cost. Plus, its application field includes microprocessors, DC/DC converters, and other low-power and low-voltage applications.
