Thyristors - TRIACs are a type of solid-state semiconductor device used for load switching and phase control applications. TRIACs, which stands for Triple Rectifier with AC, are a three-legged device that functions as a variable-level switch in an AC circuit. A TRIAC device consists of two thyristors connected in an inverse parallel (cathode to anode) configuration with a common gate. As they provide bidirectional and variable-level control, they are used extensively in conjunction with AC loads in varying power applications such as dimmers, motor speed and temperature controls, etc. TRIACs are also often used in power factor correction circuits and for controlling AC power loads.

L6X5RP Application Field and Working Principle

The L6X5RP Series of TRIACs by LEM are specifically designed to maximize the flexibility and performance of AC power operation in several applications. Thanks to the use of the latest in low-power technology, they offer low power and excellent electrical characteristics, making them an optimal choice for AC power switching, dimming, and temperature control needs. As they offer bidirectional and variable-level control, they are suitable for a wide variety of applications such as motor speed and power factor correction circuits.

The L6X5RP TRIAC series is composed of five different versions, each of which offers different levels of power handling capability. The lowest-power rated version, the L6X5RP6B, can handle up to 6A of power at 30V, while the higher-power rated versions are capable of handling up to 10A at 30V. Each version offers a high surge current capability, as well as a fast switching time of only 5μs.

The working principle employed by the L6X5RP series is similar to that of a thyristor in an AC circuit. When a voltage is applied to the gate of the device, it switches the AC power to the load. The voltage at which the TRIAC turns ON, or turns OFF, is determined by the Gate Current Threshold Voltage (VGT). The TRIAC is turned ON when the gate voltage reaches or exceeds VGT, and is turned OFF when the voltage is below VGT. The Gate Trigger Voltage (VGT) is also adjustable, allowing the user to control the AC power to the load.

In addition to its bidirectional switching and variable-level control capabilities, the L6X5RP series also offers fast switching time, high surge current ratings, and low thermal resistance, making it the perfect TRIAC for AC switching, dimming and temperature control applications. Thanks to its combination of features, this TRIAC series is a favored choice for industrial and consumer applications alike.
