PMIC - Voltage Regulators - LinearThe L7912CP is a three terminal negative voltage regulator from STMicroelectronics. It offers excellent temperature stability, high accuracy and low noise output in a compact, 8-pin package. The device simply reduces the DC voltage to a specified lower level with its excellent output current capability of up to 1.5 A.The L7912CP application range covers from -7V to -25V, with an adjustable output voltage from -1.2V to -36V. It is a linear voltage regulator with a high PSRR (Power Supply Rejection Ratio) of 80dB at 1KHz, making it suitable for a wide range of applications, such as post-regulator for switching, UPS and DC-DC converters, battery-powered systems, high-current, high-PSRR applications, and AC adapter-based designs, among others.The operating temperature range is from -40 to +125°C, providing operation in extreme conditions and high reliability with its comprehensive protection features. The L7912CP includes overvoltage and thermal protection, making it resistant to overload conditions. The L7912CP working principle is based in the application of a Zener diode with a given voltage rating connected in series with the regulator’s pass element, which sets the output voltage. As the output voltage slowly falls to the desired regulation level, the error amplifier compares the voltage with a reference voltage and adjusts the current sent to the control pass element accordingly.The current control pass element could be a transistor, MOSFET or bipolar transistor, which is capable of a small enough collector current to permit regulation of the output voltage within the device requirements. The output voltage of the regulator will remain within the specified tolerance even if the load is changed and it has very high accuracy at room temperature. The regulating current through the pass element is controlled by an error amplifier with a constant open loop gain of 100,000 at low frequencies and beyond a certain frequency there is a roll-off. This roll-off frequency can be adjusted by selecting the external components. The L7912CP therefore provides a very stable regulation of the output voltage over a wide frequency range.The L7912CP is designed for high reliability, power supply rejections and temperature stability, making it the ideal regulator for various applications. The device is designed for high current ratings, making it ideal for battery-based systems and other critical applications where high output current is needed. It has extremely high PSRR specification, making it a great choice for post-regulation and AC adapter based designs, as well as high-PSRR applications such as audio/video equipment and automotive applications.
