Lightning arresters (LACs) are an important type of devices used to protect electrical and electronic circuits from external disturbances, mainly due to lightning. As the external disturbances can be very strong and have a wide frequency range, lightning arresters must be designed to handle relatively large amounts of energy. The most common type of lightning arrester is the gas discharge tube (GDT) arrester primarily due to its cost effectiveness and ease of installation. GDT arresters employ a spark gap or gas gap filled with a noble gas such as argon or helium and a self- extinguishing resistor to protect against lightning and other electrical disturbances.

A gas discharge tube arrester (GDT) consists of an enclosed cylindrical tube with ends which are semi-permeable. Gas usually flows out of the tube through the permeable ends, but the amount of gas is limited, so the pressure inside the tube is regulated. When an electrical current passes through the GDT arrester, it produces a spark within the tube which is capable of withstanding up to several thousand volts. The spark gap forces the current to dissipate and thus limits its damage to the protected electrical circuit.

In order to increase the effectiveness of the GDT arrester, additional features such as a spark gap with magnetic shielding, a fusible resistor, and a shunt device may be added. The spark gap reduces the electrical current to a safe level while the magnetic shield prevents electromagnetic fields from interfering with the spark gap current. The fusible resistor limits the amount of current that the GDT arrester can sustain. The shunt device acts as a switch and is used to rapidly discharge the remaining amount of electricity after the spark gap has extinguished the current.

GDT lightning arresters have many advantages over other types of lightning arresters, such as elevated towers, air gaps, and spark gaps. GDT arresters have a much larger spark gap current capacity than spark gaps, which allows them to handle higher lightning currents before damage occurs. They can also be installed in much less space than other types of arresters, allowing for a neat and tidy presentation on electrical distribution systems. Additionally, the spark gap provides a much more reliable method of protection than the other types of arrester.

GDT lightning arresters are ideal for various applications, such as power transformer protection, electrical bus lightning protection, radios, telecommunications and air traffic control systems, data processing systems, and any other system that needs to be protected from lightning or other electrical disturbances. GDT arresters are also used in electronic circuits such as those in electric trains, automobiles, medical equipment, and consumer electronics. This type of arrester is also capable of protecting a system from high frequency electromagnetic interference.

In conclusion, gas discharge tube (GDT) arresters are an effective and reliable means of protection from lightning and other electrical disturbances. The spark gap of the GDT arrester is capable of dissipating high electrical currents while the other additional components, such as the fusible resistor and shunt device, further protect the system from damage. Furthermore, GDT arresters can be used in a variety of applications ranging from power transformers to consumer electronics. Thus, GDT arresters offer a multi-functional solution for providing protection from lightning and other electrical disturbances.
