The LAN7801/9JX is an advanced, highly integrated USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet controller optimized to meet the needs of small form factors embedded applications. It is built around a USB 3.0 compliant Physical Root Port/Link Layer, 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet PHY Transceiver and a highly integrated embedded network processing unit (NPU) that enables fast, efficient and bandwidth optimized packet processing.
The LAN7801/9JX is designed to offer a truly “single-chip” Ethernet solution, bringing high-speed connectivity to small form factor systems. It also provides full 10/100/1000 Ethernet support with advanced power management, fast link times and support for popular standards such as 802.3, 802.3u and 802.3ab.
The LAN7801/9JX is designed to reduce design complexity and offer a simple, low-cost way to integrate Ethernet into small form factor embedded systems. It supports power management features such as link-up/link-down, Wake-on-LAN and Energy Efficient Ethernet. It also offers advanced features such as network port mirroring, broadcast traffic storm control, jumbo frames, flow control, and support for IEEE 1588 precision time protocol.
The LAN7801/9JX is extremely versatile and offers a range of applications across numerous industries. Examples include embedded applications such as industrial automation, embedded medical systems, retail systems, and consumer electronics. The LAN7801/9JX can also be used in numerous smart home applications such as home entertainment systems and gaming systems.
As far as the working principle of the LAN7801/9JX is concerned, it is based on a two-tiered, multi-layered data architecture. This architecture includes an Ethernet Physical and Data Link Layer, a network processor, and a low-level MAC layer for the implementation of all Ethernet packet types in the full 802.3 media access control protocol.
The device creates a strong connection between the Ethernet physical and data link layers, allowing the use of Ethernet standards up to eight ports via full-duplex and MII interface, compliant with IEEE802.3, any interface supporting 10/100/1000 Mbps. The network processor, on the other hand, takes care of the entire packet flow across all layers and supports two host interface choices: USB3.0 and PCIe. The processor enables context-based packet routing and address translation, along with providing advanced Quality of Service functions, including QoS, VLAN and TSO support, among others.
The low-level MAC layer implements the full 802.3 media access control protocol and offers advanced Ethernet features such as Real-Time Quality of Service, device configuration, auto-negotiation, MDI/MDIX auto-crossover and auto-polarity. It also supports auto-negotiation functions for both, speed and duplex of the Ethernet connection. Likewise, the device supports customer packet filtering and multicast address filtering, in order to provide secure and efficient data transmission.
The LAN7801/9JX is a highly integrated, single-chip Ethernet solution that offers unprecedented performance in terms of speed, power consumption and cost efficiency for embedded applications.
