The LC14 is an ultra-low capacitance transient voltage suppression (TVS) diode, designed to offer ultra low capacitance performance in applications ranging from interface protection systems to USB and other high-speed I/O buffers. The LC14 series features robust construction and ultra-low capacitance. The variable capacitance range of the LC14, from 0.1pF to 3.5pF, is tailored to applications requiring maximum capacitance reduction.

The low capacitance LC14 is designed with a series of atmospheric-pressure graded junction guard ring diodes, with the lowest capacitance of approximately 0.1pF @ 5V, making it suitable for maximum surge protection and transient protection of users’ high speed I/O systems. The LC14 is optimized for bandwidths of up to 50 MHz and features a peak clamping voltage rating of 15V.

The LC14 is ideal for high speed data communication systems, interface systems, and other signal line and power line protection applications. It is designed to protect your system’s sensitive components from transients, whilst also providing an extremely low test capacitance for maximum bandwidth protection. It also provides ESD protection up to IEC 61000-4-2 (ESD) ±8kV (HBM, Human Body Model).

The LC14 also includes a wide range of features, which are designed to optimize its performance in a variety of environments. It is built on a lugged glass housing, which provides thermal and mechanical stability, and its glass passivation coating which helps to protect the junction from any damage caused by humidity or oxidization. The LC14 also features a low junction-to-case capacitance of only 0.2pF, which helps to reduce the capacitive effect of high frequency signals passing through the diode.

In terms of its working principle, the LC14 operates in a similar manner to that of a normal zener diode. The diode is connected in a circuit which connects the anode of the diode to the positive rail and the cathode of the diode to the ground. When a transient of excessive voltage travels through the circuit, the zener diode channels the excess current away from circuit so as to protect the system.

The LC14 also features a breakdown voltage rating of 12V, which is slightly higher than that of traditional zener diodes.
