LF18CDT-TRY Application Field and Working Principle
The LF18CDT-TRY is a monolithic integrated three-terminal linear voltage regulator, which is suitable for an array of usage scenarios like low voltage power-supply, temperature environment and noise resistant etc. It has good thermal stability and fast-response ability, which helps ensure the working current and output voltage stability. This LF18CDT-TRY monolithic integrated linear regulator belongs to Linear PMIC Voltage Regulator family, as shown in the following figure.

The LF18CDT-TRY voltage regulator consists of a bandgap reference, an error amplifier, an output stage, and other related supporting circuits. The key part in the system is the error amplifier, whose output is a replicated voltage of the reference voltage. This voltage is compared with the feedback voltage of the output stage, which is then fed back to the error amplifier. Additional features like over-current protection, thermal shutdown, overvoltages and undervoltage shutdown are also implemented in the voltage regulator.
The working principle of the LF18CDT-TRY monolithic integrated linear voltage regulator is shown in the following figure, which presents the components involved in the overall system and their working relationship.

The first step is the reference voltage setting. In this step, a bandgap reference is used to generate a stable voltage VREF, usually fixed at 1.2V. This voltage is then fed to the error amplifier through a series of resistors and capacitors. In the next step, the error amplifier will compare the output of the reference voltage VREF with the voltage of the output stage VOUT, and then there will be a gain setting parameter provided to the adjustable error amplifier PM, also set up according to the load characteristic. Finally, the output voltage VOUT of the linear regulator is obtained, and a feedback path is established to control the output voltage stability to meet the requirements.
The LF18CDT-TRY voltage regulator offers additional protection features like reverse-biased protection, over-current/overload protection and thermal shutdown for safety. The thermal shutdown feature turns off the regulator when the temperature exceeds the hardware preset threshold. In addition, the voltage regulator also has an active high-voltage limiter to protect the chip from overvoltage damages. The power utility undervoltage shutdown feature helps turn off the regulator when the input is too low, which helps the regulators last longer.
The LF18CDT-TRY voltage regulator is used for systems requiring both high output accuracy and ultra-long life, with its low drop out feature, fast response time and excellent temperature stability. As this voltage regulator is built with low drop-out architecture, it has the flexibility to work as a low drop-out (LDO) or linear regulator based on the application requirements. Its low-power dissipation and high speed switching performance make it a preferred choice in the areas of automotive, consumer, industrial and medical applications. Other features like reverse-biased protection, over-current/overload protection, thermal shutdown, and active high-voltage limiter makes it an ideal choice for robust and reliable systems.
