Application field and Working Principle of LF442CN

The LF442CN is a linear-amplifier instrumentation, Operational Amplifier (OP amp) and buffer amplifier which is used in various commercial and industrial applications. It includes common-collector and common-base configurations, depending on the application being served. It is a linear, ±15V supply power amplifier, providing low noise, wide bandwidth and high slew rate for use with a variety of analog, digital and mixed signal input/output signals.

The LF442CN can be operated from a single supply or dual supplies. With the single supply, the device functions like a differential-input single-ended-output amplifier and can amplify signals up to 200MHz. There are also voltage feedback and current feedback versions.

The LF442CN also has an excellent slew rate of 12V/μsecond and an output current of 40mA at ± 15V supplies, making it suitable for driving loads which fare heavily dependent on high-current drive. The device is also equipped with a hFE (input-to-output gain) of 120. The device is rated for a maximum collector supply voltage of 18V and a maximum total power dissipation of 450mW.

Working Principle

The LF442CN employs a combination of P- and N-channel transistors in a simple three-stage monolithic design which allows it to achieve a high output current and fast switching speed. The transistors conduct and cut off according to the voltage at the junction of the P- and N- devices.

In its most common application, the device acts as an operational amplifier by feeding a differential input signal to the input of the device. The voltage difference between the two input pins is amplified and the amplified signal drives the output through a relatively high impedance created by the differential transistors.
