Working Principle
The LM1086ISX-ADJ/NOPB is a three-terminal adjustable Low Dropout (LDO) voltage regulator. It consists of a reference voltage source and two transistors, a Darlington pair composed internally of a PNP-like collector-base voltage feedback circuit, connected to the input terminal.
The circuit operates as follows: When the output voltage is set via an external resistor, the voltage across the Darlington pair is sensed by the reference voltage source. This will cause the current flowing into the output terminal to increase or decrease, thus causing the output voltage to match the reference voltage. As the input voltage source changes, the Darlington pair adjusts the output voltage accordingly.
In addition, the LM1086ISX-ADJ/NOPB has an adjustable current limit protection feature. It is designed to prevent output current from exceeding a predetermined level. When the current reaches the set limit, the device will shut down and the output voltage will drop to zero. The current limit can be adjusted through an external resistor.
An output overvoltage crowbar protection circuit is also integrated into the LM1086ISX-ADJ/NOPB.
