Analog Devices’ LM109K STEEL/NOPB is an adjustable three-terminal negative voltage regulator with a wide operating range of 4V to 32 V. It provides a regulated output voltage that is lower than its input voltage. The output voltage can be adjusted between 0V and −29V with two resistors, either of them can be selected using a selection pin which can either be connected to the voltage out, or to the ground. There are two versions of the regulator, the K variant and the D variant. The D variant has a lower input voltage range of 4V to 28V compared to the K variant that has a range of 4V to 32V.

The K variant has a typical output current of 1A and can deliver up to 4A (at a junction temperature of 70°C). The D variant is capable of 0.8A typical output current and can provide up to 3.2A (at a junction temperature of 70°C). The K variant can reach higher output currents and have lower drop out voltage, while the D variant can provide lower output current and have higher drop out voltage.

The LM109K STEEL/NOPB regulator consists of a raised current-gain, PNP transistor with a internal current-control circuit, for controlling the output voltage. This current-control circuit senses the output voltage and compares it with a internally generated reference voltage. When the two voltages differ, the control circuit sends a current to the base of the amplifier transistor which in turn controls the current drawn from the input source.

The LM109K STEEL/NOPB can be used to produce different outputs by adjusting the resistors R1 and R2. R1 is connected between the output and the adjustment pin, while R2 is connected between the adjustment pin and the ground. The ratio of the resistors determines the output voltage as follows: Vout =−Vref (1 + (R2/R1)).

In addition to the adjustable output voltage, the LM109K STEEL/NOPB also provides two additional features such as thermal shut-down and line transient protection. Thermal shut-down provides protection against both overloads and out of regulation conditions, reducing the output current in order to limit the junction temperature. The line transient protection feature provides surge immunity by limiting the inrush current into the regulator when a large output load spike occurs.

The LM109K STEEL/NOPB is a popular three-terminal adjustable voltage regulator and is used for an array of applications including layer regulators, mobile phone power supplies, instrumentation and control systems, audio, video and telecommunications. It is available in a TO-220 package and can operate over ambient temperatures ranging from -40°C to125°C.
