LM1117SX-3.3/NOPB Application Field and Working Principle
One of the products of the Texas Instruments\' Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMIC) line is the LM1117SX-3.3/NOPB. This voltage regulator is a three-terminal regulator which, like other regulators, helps limit and stabilize the output voltage and current of an electrical circuit. This regulator is classified as a linear voltage regulator; to that end, it is in a category of PMICs known as Voltage Regulators - Linear.
The LM1117SX-3.3/NOPB is a low-dropout (LDO) regulator that has a 2.5V to 11V wide input voltage range. This regulator is efficient and reliable for a range of applications in industrial, telecommunications or consumer electronics industries. Typical applications for the LM1117SX-3.3/NOPB include DC-DC converters, microprocessor systems and sensitive electronics.
The LM1117SX-3.3/NOPB circuit includes a micro-power voltage reference and an error amplifier, a MOSFET pass transistor, and a current-limit circuit for thermally protected overload protection. Its maximum output current capacity is 1.5A and its external components are also small and inexpensive. It also includes a soft-start feature which prevents inrush currents from damaging external components.

As its maximum dropout voltage is only 0.6V, it is ideal for low input voltage applications compared to other linear regulators. In addition, its low quiescent current (5mA) and low sleep mode current (0.6mA) make it an ideal choice for circuits operating in power-constrained environments. Combined with its thermal protection feature, the LM1117SX-3.3/NOPB offers reliable and cost-effective voltage regulation.
