Working Principle

The LM118H is a high precision instrumentation amplifier, with a full set of features including high input voltages, low noise and high accuracy. It consists of three main parts: input transistors, compensation transistor and output transistors. Each of these components has a role to play in providing the amplifiers with the desired performance.

The input transistors are biased with an operating voltage applied to the drain and gate. The drain voltage allows current to flow through the transistor and the gate voltage determines the current flowing through the device. The common-mode voltage is then applied to the input transistors, which sets the amplification level of the amplifier.

The compensation transistor is used to set the bias of the input and output transistors. The change in the bias of the transistors reflects on the input stage, allowing the amplifier to have wider bandwidth and a higher slew rate.
