LM1851N is a high-performance power management integrated circuit (PMIC), which is designed for power management applications. As a specialized power management IC, it provides a wide range of features and functions, such as, adjustable output voltage from 0.25V to 25V and overvoltage protection. It also provides excellent thermal management with its safe-operation thermal protection circuit. In addition, this IC has a low voltage operation mode, and it can reduce the dynamic power consumption significantly.
This IC has two power supply domains, which are the input power (VCC) and output power (Vout). It uses a voltage regulating loop to maintain the output voltage and can provide up to 1.5A current output. This PMIC has a wide operating temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) and offers excellent ripple rejection capability of 80dB(oV P-P).
LM1851N can be used in a variety system power management applications, such as computer and gaming, video and audio systems, automotive, industrial and home automation, etc. In addition, it is suitable for power conversion, voltage protection, and voltage monitoring. Its fast turn-on and turn-off time makes it an ideal choice for power management in high speed digital circuits. It also offers high accuracy in voltage regulation and supports a wide range of input voltage from 6V to 28V.
As for its working principle, the LM1851N has a voltage-controlled P-FET (Voltage-Controlled MOSFET), which is connected to the input voltage VCC. The voltage control loop regulates the voltage at the output terminal Vout based on the feedback voltage. When the desired output voltage at Vout is lower than the VCC voltage, the voltage control loop will decrease the voltage of Vout in order to match the demand. When the desired output voltage at Vout is higher than the VCC voltage, the voltage control loop will increase the voltage of Vout. The voltage-controlled P-FET helps to provide highly efficient power conversion by adjusting the current flowing through the power conversion elements.
The LM1851N also has a thermal protection circuit, which is implemented using a one-time programmable (OTP) latch. This thermal protection circuit detects and responds to excessive thermal conditions by controlling the thermal status of the device. It can temporarily disable the nonlinear compensation and reduce the output voltage if the die temperature becomes too high. Furthermore, the integrated fault protection circuit can detect various fault conditions and respond accordingly by latch-off the output voltage.
The LM1851N provides a high performing and cost-effective solution for high-performance power conversion. Its wide range of features, such as, adjustable output voltage range, precise voltage regulation, fast turn-on and turn-off times, overvoltage protection, and thermal protection makes it an ideal choice for advanced power management applications. Additionally, this PMIC offers excellent EMI performance, which is important for system designers in the development of EMI compliant products. It also has a very low power consumption and is capable up to 85% conversion efficiency in most applications.
