LM193N application field and working principle

The LM193N is a dual-in-line comparator fabricated in a single quad package. It belongs to the Linear – Comparator family and is excellent for applications in which high-speed, wide-ranging analog signal processing is required. Its unique features such as high-performance, reliable operation, and small package size make the LM193N a device of choice for many electronic applications.

Performance Characteristics

The LM193N has an extended supply voltage range of 4.5V to 36V, low input bias current (less than 100nA) and low quiescent current (less than 1mA). It also offers a high slew rate of 0.2V/msec, a fast response time of 1μsec, and bandwidth of 2MHz. It is capable of delivering a maximum output current of 50mA and a peak output current of 100mA. The device offers a hysteresis of 1.7V, ensuring accurate and repeatable switching action. The LM193N also provides a low offset of 2mV, providing superior accuracy and stability in signal processing applications.

Application

The LM193N is suitable for use in a variety of applications due to its wide operating range and excellent performance. Such applications include signal processing, comparator, voltage regulator, temperature sensing, level sensing, timer/counter, on/off control, switch debouncing, motor speed and direction control, and optical scanners. In addition, the device can be used for a variety of switch-limit control functions in automotive, industrial, and medical applications.

Working principle

The LM193N consists of two independent voltage comparators, each consisting of two series PMOS transistors, two series PNPN transistors, and two series NPN transistors. It also has two differential input terminals (IN1 and IN2) and two output terminals (OUT1 and OUT2). When the voltage at the two input terminals is equal, the circuit is balanced and the output is a low voltage (less than 1 volt). The output terminates in a low impedance node, keeping the output stable. If the input voltage at any one terminal is greater than the voltage at the other terminal, the transistors in the respective output section become forward-biased, raising the output voltage level. The output continues to switch from low to high as the input voltage difference increases, alternating between both output terminals as required.

In addition to the output voltage, the LM193N also detects the polarity of the input voltage. When the polarity of the input voltage is known, it is easier to design feedforward and feedback control systems, which is an important feature of interfaces and other control applications.
