The LM2716MTEV is a monolithic peripheral rated 5V or 3.3V peripheral to host controller power supply controllers designed for ON/OFF and PWM controllers that are primarily used for power supplies, such as evaluation boards, DC/DC converters and AC/DC converters (off-line SMPS).
The application fields of the LM2716MTEV are mainly for evaluation boards or reference boards commonly used in laboratory and engineering applications. The square wave output can be used to regulate or adjust the output voltage according to the specific load requirements. In addition, its PWM control method improves the efficiency and transient response of the power supply. The shut off voltage is very low, which greatly saves power consumption.
The working principle of the LM2716MTEV is based on a control loop with an external voltage reference IC and fixed current limit. The voltage is input to the voltage reference IC, and the resulting 1.21V signal is sent to the non-inverting input of the error amplifier of the LM2716MTEV. The current limiting circuit consists of an adjustable current source and an External MOSFET. The voltage spikes generated by the inductor when the power device is turned off are limited in the External Schottky diode.
The LM2716MTEV uses a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) loop control to adjust the switching frequency and duty cycle of the MOSFET, thereby controlling the output voltage dynamically. At the same time, the current sensing uses an external N-channel MOSFET, and its drain is directly connected to the output of the LM2716MTEV, so that the current limit can be accurately controlled, and the shutdown voltage of the MOSFET is low until the current limit is completely turned off. The error amplifier also includes a transconductance amplifier for temperature compensation, which ensures the stability of the output voltage and accuracy of the current limit.
In the application of the LM2716MTEV, the PFet gate has to be pulled up to Vcc voltage via a resistor or directly driven by an external controller. In the second case, the PFet gate voltage has to be close to Vcc voltage when the supply voltage is switched•off. The PFet gate will be then driven by the external controller which will select the desired PFet gate voltage once the supply voltage is ON. When the supply voltage is ON, the PFet gate voltage is then used as PID loop input to achieve the desired output. The PID loop can also be used for soft start-up purpose. The PFet gate voltage is controlled by an external controller that can be connected to the PFet gate voltage input of the LM2716MTEV.
In summary, the LM2716MTEV is an ideal solution for evaluation boards or reference boards for DC/DC or AC/DC converters (Off-Line SMPS). It features fast transient response, low voltage shut off, current sensing capability and temperature compensation. Furthermore, it allows for precise control of the switching frequency and duty cycle of the MOSFET, thereby providing dynamic control of the output voltage, and simultaneously can be used for soft start-up.
