The LM27961TLEV is a highly efficient, boost mode, power-factor-corrected AC/DC converter intended for use in lighting applications, specifically for driving LEDs. The integrated full-bridge rectification, high frequency switching power supply, PFC control, and current regulation enable maximum power with integrated high density LEDs while providing excellent power efficiency, EMI immunity and a high-quality output.

The LM27961TLEV application field includes driving high-brightness LEDs to achieve the best balance between cost and performance. Different combinations of LED string voltages, efficiency, ripple and output current are attainable when used with any desired LED color or type.

The LM27961TLEV working principle is based on LED string characteristics, LED voltage, and LED current. For LED string applications, the LM27961TLEV can be configured to drive off-line, AC/DC power supplies, with power factor correction that ensures the output current is well regulated. The constant current regulation keeps the LED’s brightness constant regardless of line and load variations.

The LM27961TLEV supports three different current regulation models; average current regulation (ACR), phase dimming and pulse width modulation (PWM) dimming. The LM27961TLEV offers excellent field programmable capability for easy configuration of the output current set-point, brightness value, as well as selectable flicker-free dimming (phase and PWM) modes.

The LM27961TLEV maximizes power efficiency and thermal stability with a highly integrated power topology, operating at the switching frequency of 45kHz to 55kHz. This allows the use of smaller inductor, capacitors and power components while achieving perfect power-on, power-off and dimming control. This IC integrated packaging eliminates the need of external control circuits, enabling extremely low standby power levels; up to 10 nA in deep sleep mode.

The LM27961TLEV includes current limiting, non-latching short circuit protection, over-temperature protection and adjustable output voltage. Output current is generated by an external pin-programmable power resistor. The device is available in the compact SO-8 package and operates from an input voltage range of 270V AC to 330V AC.
