LM2901YDT is a low voltage comparator, which forms an integrated part of the Linear – Comparators. Comparators are generally defined as circuit elements that compare two input voltages or currents and generate an output that indicates which of the two is the larger. Comparators can only take two distinct values at its output - one indicating that the voltage it sensed at the input is greater than the reference voltage, and the other indicating that the voltage at the input is lesser than the reference voltage.The LM2901YDT is an improved version of the LM2901Y and is designed to operate over a wide range of supply voltages from 4.5V to 16V. It also features Schmitt trigger inputs, higher output sink and source current, a much lower input bias current and high input impedance. With the LM2901YDT, a quiescent current of only 6 microamps is required, compared to the 29 microamps for the LM2901Y.The input structure of an LM2901YDT includes two non-inverting and two inverting inputs via four independent transistors, two PNP and two NPN transistors polarised as sources. A separate resistor is used to configure the reference voltage, transferring a constant voltage to the inputs.The output structure of the LM2901YDT includes two transistors that are tailored to drive an RC filter circuit, which is commonly used with comparators. The two transistors are connected towards their bases, while the emitter is connected to the common rail. The output impedance of this comparator ranges from 200 ohms to 500 ohms, depending on the voltage at the inputs.The LM2901YDT is designed to work under wide operating conditions and consumes little current, making it ideal for use in a variety of applications. It is used in photo detectors, level sensing circuits and voltage feedback systems, as well as for controlling electro-mechanical relays and optical lamps. The photo detector applications of the LM2901YDT involve a photo receptor and the comparator circuit. Here, a physical light will be detected by the photo receptor and converted to a corresponding voltage. The voltage from the photo receptor is then applied to one input of the comparator while the reference voltage is applied to the other input. Depending on the comparator output, it will be possible to control any switch or circuit.The voltage feedback application of the LM2901YDT involves a sensing resistance and a reference voltage. The reference voltage is applied to one of the inputs while the sensed voltage is applied to the other input. The sensed voltage can be obtained by passing the current through the sensing resistance. A voltage divider can be used to achieve the desired sensing voltage. The output of LM2901YDT will indicate which of the two voltages is higher.In level sensing applications, the LM2901YDT is connected between two intermediate voltage levels, and its output indicates which of the two levels has been detected. It is widely used for sensing liquid level, oil level and capillary level, among many others.The LM2901YDT can also be used as an electro-mechanical relay controller. Here, the sensed voltage from the relay is applied to one input of the comparator, while the reference voltage is applied to the other input. Depending on the state of the reference voltage, the output of the comparator can be used to turn the relay on or off.In summary, the LM2901YDT is capable of functioning under a wide range of supply voltages, consuming only 6 microamps of current.
