LM293AN application field and working principle

The LM293AN is a linear-comparator general purpose monolithic integrated circuit, which is popularly used by many industrial and consumer market applications. The LM293AN compares two signals inputted into A and B terminals, even with large errors in operating voltage, thus providing a maximum power output of 40 mW with a peak current at 10 mA. The comparator is commonly used for high speed peak detection, hysteresis control, low level control and other critical applications.

The device consists of an analog voltage comparator followed by an integrated logic amplifier with an open collector output. The comparator part contains two high-impedance differential amplifiers. It has an internal offset from 0 V to 0.5V and the large common mode voltage range lets it perform simple differential amplifier function, either as an inverter or non-inverting amplifier.

The LM293AN working principle starts with the two different analog signals being converted into square waves after the comparator detects that the two input signals are unequal, the logic amplifier part then interprets the information by entailing either a low signal or a high signal output. The input voltage can be lower than the signal input voltage provided that they stay within the specified operating range. The device may also serve as an amplifier with a fixed gain of two.

This device is immensely valuable in providing highly accurate signal comparison for speeds up to 1MHz. Operating temperatures range from -20℃ to +85℃ and this device has a low power consumption of 500 μA typical and 3mA maximum. It also has a wide voltage operating range from 4.5 V to 36V with a wide common mode operational range from -2 V to 36 V, ideal for several applications.

The ability to accurately discriminate between two analog signals provides the thought out engineering for a wide range of consumer and industrial applications. An example of a consumer application is the automatic adjustment of audio volume via the comparison of input signal versus the average signal. Industrial applications include position control of pumps, printing machines, motors and conveyors.
