The LM2903M is an off-the-shelf, monolithic integrated circuit (IC) designed specifically for use as a low-voltage, low-power comparator. It has wide operating temperature range, good signal-to-noise ratio and low signal distortion. It is available in both 8-pin and 10-pin packages and is ideal for a wide variety of uses.

The LM2903M, released by National Semiconductor, belongs to the Linear - Comparators family of linear integrated circuits. The output of this IC is either open-collector or totem-pole with a complementary output. The LM2903M has good electrical performance, making it suitable for various control and signal conditioning applications.

Comparators are circuits that can compare two input signals and output depending whether the signals are greater or smaller than the preset value. The LM2903M is an example of a low-power comparator that has a wide operating voltage range and configured as a non-inverting comparator. It has TTL/MOS compatible inputs and has an inbuilt Schmitt trigger action. This feature helps to reduce the amount of noise associated with digital circuits, providing reliable operation.

The LM2903M operates by comparing two input signals, typically an input signal from a transducer or sensor, with a reference voltage. When the input signal is smaller than the reference voltage, the LM2903M outputs a logic high, representing the “not greater than” condition of comparison. When the input signal is greater than the reference voltage, the output will be a logic low, indicating a “greater than” result of comparison. This is achieved by monitoring the difference between the two inputs and outputting one state or the other.

The LM2903M has good noise rejection, with the ability to reject up to 15 mV of differential noise with minimal affect on the accuracy of comparison. It has two power saving modes; the first is on-demand current saving in switching mode, when the device is disabled. The second is on-demand current saving in linear mode, when the differential input is below the established trip point. In this mode the oscillations are low enough (2 mV typical) to reduce power consumption.
