LM293DG4 application field and working principle
The LM293DG4 is a Quadruple Differential Comparator commonly known as a Linear – Comparator. It is used in a wide range of applications ranging from analog-to-digital converters, switching regulators, motor controllers, medical and battery monitoring systems, voltage references and current drivers. It is a 4-pin, fault-protected device with a wide supply voltage range of between 4.5V and 40V. This Voltage Comparator from the Linear – Comparators family has very low power consumption and offers both hysteresis and low offset capacitance.The main purpose of this device is to compare two separate input voltages and produce one output depending on whether the input voltages are low or high. This output can be used for alarm systems or for switching specific circuits as needed. It contains two independent voltage comparators enclosed under a reference input which can be used to tune the threshold mV variation point.The LM293DG4 is mounted on a 4-pin plastic dual-inline package (PDIP) with each pin representing either an input or output of the device. It has an open drain type output meaning it can be connected to other devices for cascading and logic level shifting. This helps provide a flexibility when used with different logic levels.The LM293DG4 produces an output voltage which is internally pulled down to ground when the input voltage is higher than the reference point and when the input voltage is below the reference point, it is pulled up to a voltage slightly below the supply voltage. This output follows the input voltage level in both states and is immune to below-rating supply voltages.Both the negative and positive inputs of the LM293DG4 are A.C. coupled and are also capable of providing a low-impedance strobe function. The strobe capability allows the user to set a specific threshold level through the reference input and ensure that the output remains in the same state until new input values greatly exceed the threshold. This feature is particularly useful in applications requiring buffering operations where typically lower power consumption is desired.A wide range of output current levels can be provided from the LM293DG4 due to its power supply common mode range. This makes it an ideal universal comparator for almost any type of application.
