The zener diode is configured in the reverse direction and the resistors are used to set the output voltage, as well as the current limit.The quiescent current through the device is controlled by the current through the NPN transistor. The base of the transistor is connected to the output terminal (Vout). The transistor can be operated in either a "series pass" or "shunt pass" configuration.
