PMIC - Voltage Regulators - Linear

The LM317LCPWR is a voltage regulator integrated circuit (IC) designed specifically for limited space, low power consumption applications. It is designed to take an unregulated input voltage and convert it into a reliable, regulated output voltage. It is composed of two transistors, two resistors, one capacitor and one operational amplifier. As a result, it is able to provide its adjustable output voltage between 0 and 25 volts, with up to 1.5A current output capability.

Power Supply Applications

One of the most common applications of the LM317LCPWR is in the design of power supplies. This includes AC/DC switching power supplies and linear power supplies, along with their more modern DC/DC converters. As a regulator, the LM317LCPWR can be used to drive power supply circuits to guarantee steady and reliable power delivery to downstream circuit boards, digital systems and other devices. Additionally, an external feedback circuit is used in conjunction with the LM317LCPWR to ensure accurate output voltage regulation.

Other Applications - LED Supplies, Audio, Battery Chargers

Aside from power supply applications, other areas that utilize the LM317LCPWR include LED supplies and audio amplifiers. For LED supplies, the LM317LCPWR provides a constant stable voltage for a high-efficiency LED supply circuit, complete with protection to prevent over-charging or over-heating. Furthermore, the LM317LCPWR is also useful in battery charging applications, where its programmable current limit enable fast and efficient charging with over-voltage protection.

Working Principle

The LM317LCPWR’s adjustable output voltage is determined by the voltages applied to its voltage adjustment pin (ADJ) and its feedback pins (FB and FB’). The voltage at pin ADJ will be roughly the same as the output voltage minus 1.2 volts. FB and FB’ will usually be a voltage divider, with FB set to about 0.25 volts higher than FB’. To increase the output voltage, increase the voltage at ADJ and/or reduce the voltage at FB. Conversely, to decrease the output voltage, reduce the voltage at ADJ and/or increase the voltage at FB.

Internally, the LM317LCPWR utilizes an error correction amplifier which compares the difference between the FB/FB’ voltages to the reference 1.25 volts. The output of this error correction amplifier is then used to control the voltage across a pass element. When the output voltage increases, the current flow through the pass element increases and vice versa. As a result, a constant voltage output is maintained at the output when the load current varies, thus providing adjustable voltage regulation.
