The LM3370SDX-3416/NOPB is a DC/DC switching regulator belonging to the PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC DC Switching Regulators category. This regulator is designed to supply a regulated 5V from a 12V input voltage. The LM3370SDX-3416/NOPB is used in systems where multiple sub-circuits need various DC power supplies. The LM3370SDX-3416/NOPB is built using a classic buck converter topology. This topology includes a pulse-width-modulated (PWM) driver stage, an inductor-capacitor filter and an output voltage regulator. In the PWM stage, the input voltage is compared with a voltage derived from a voltage reference. When the driver’s output is low, a transistor is turned on and the input voltage is applied across the inductor. Inductor current increases until the current through the inductor reaches the maximum allowed by the input supply. At this point, the driver’s output is switched to the high state and the transistor is turned off. The inductor current is then transferred to the output capacitor and the output voltage is regulated.

The LM3370SDX-3416/NOPB features an adjustable switching frequency ranging from 200kHz to 1.5MHz with synchronized operation. In order to reduce EMI, the LM3370SDX-3416/NOPB employs a spread spectrum technique in which the switching frequency is jittered. This reduces the rate of rise of the radiated emissions.

The LM3370SDX-3416/NOPB includes an input over-voltage protection circuit and an output over-current protection circuit. The input over-voltage protection circuit is used to prevent damage to the regulator in case of an input voltage surge. The over-current protection circuit is used to maintain the maximum output current limit during output over-loading. The LM3370SDX-3416/NOPB also includes a thermal protection circuit which will shut the regulator down to prevent damage in high temperature environments.

The LM3370SDX-3416/NOPB is designed to offer low output voltage ripple and low output noise. The noise is minimized by the use of high quality capacitors at the output. The output voltage ripple is minimized by the use of an external output capacitor and is regulated through an internal oscillator. The LM3370SDX-3416/NOPB has a high output power capability up to 20 Watts with a 12V supply. It is packaged into an 8-pin Pb-free PowerWet™ package and is operational over the -40°C to +85°C temperature range.
