The LM339M is one of the most widely used comparators in the world. It is a versatile, high-speed, low-power differential amplifier used to compare two single-ended voltage signals. The LM339M is also used as a precision difference amplifier, a temperature-stable digital-to-analog converter, a temperature-stable voltage limiter, an active low-pass filter, an active band-pass filter, a voltage regulator, a phase comparator and a zero cross detector.
The LM339M can be used in numerous applications and is convenient to use due to its low cost and small size. It is used to measure and compare voltage differential signals and to initiate a logic level output when one input voltage exceeds another. It has a wide range of applications and is used to detect over- and under-voltage, to provide a time delay, as a logic level converter, in level stabilization circuits, to sense capacitive loads, and in pulse-width modulation circuits.
The LM339M is a voltage comparator with four independent, open-collector, differential voltage inputs. The differential input voltage is fed to a differential amplifier built with a pair of matched N-channel MOSFETS. The output of the differential amplifier switches on the N-channel transistor when the input voltage exceeds the reference voltage. When the switching activity occurs the output goes low and an external transistor, controlled by the output, can be turned on.
The working principle behind the functioning of the LM339M chip is quite simple. It compares two voltage inputs and produces a logic level output that tells the user which voltage is higher than the other. The chip is powered by a 5V supply and each input voltage is applied to the differential input of the chip. The two inputs are comparator inputs and the output is the control output.
