The LM3551SD is a high-power LED driver integrated circuit (IC), developed by Allegro™ MicroSystems. It is part of the company’s family of Low-Cost Single-Channel LED Drivers, designed for driving a single high-power LED from 12V or 24V sources. This LED driver can be categorized as a PMIC – LED Drivers device.This device is uniquely designed to provide an accurate color temperature control of LEDs and offers constant current regulation. It is rated for an operating temperature range of -40°C to +85°C and is also capable of delivering up to 15 Watts of power to a single LED at peak brightness. The LM3551SD is ideal for applications such as street and area lighting, automotive lighting, or any application that requires a high precision color temperature control.In order to ensure its efficient performance, the device continuously adjusts the output current of each channel based on a user-defined reference voltage (VMON pin). Thus, the device can be used to regulate the LED current across the entire load range. This accuracy enables reliable LED operation and provides constant color temperature characteristics. A pair of frequency modulation inputs (FMOD1, FMOD2) is also provided to control the output current over a wide range of frequencies.The LM3551SD operates on 12V and 24V sources, making it well suited for automotive or industrial applications. The device also offers a wide input voltage range (3V - 25V) and includes an adjustable soft-start circuit to minimize in-rush current. The device features pulse-width modulation (PWM) mode, enabling dimming of the output current from 10% to 100%. The device also includes a thermal protection circuit which disables the output if the IC temperature exceeds the predetermined limit (150°C).The LM3551SD is available in a compact, leadless (30LQFN) package, making it well suited for applications with limited space. The device comes in two configurations – PWM dimmable (LM3551SD-P) and non-PWM dimmable (LM3551SD-N). In addition, the device can be programmed via a simple 3-wire serial interface, allowing customers to configure the device’s parameters and adjust the output current quickly and easily.Overall, the LM3551SD is a low-cost, single-channel LED driver that provides a highly accurate color temperature control of LEDs.
