The LM3578AN/NOPB is a high-frequency step-down switching regulator. This voltage regulator is part of Texas Instruments\' offering of power management integrated circuits (PMICs). These devices provide the capability to provide regulated output voltages ranging from 1.5V to 20V, depending on the model series. LM3578AN/NOPB devices are available in either plastic or small outline packages. This device is rated for an operating temperature range of -40° Celsius to +85°Celsius.
The LM3578AN/NOPB is designed for efficient, economical, light-load performance. Its pulse-width modulation (PWM) control circuitry maintains maximum efficiency over a wide range of load conditions. Typical applications for this voltage regulator include use in 12V DC-to-DC switching power applications, battery-powered systems, 1.8V and 2.5V low-noise voltage regulation, and DC-to-DC converter/inverter power sources.
The LM3578AN/NOPB utilizes an error amplifier to sense the output voltage and compare it to an internal voltage reference (VREF). This requires the addition of feedback, compensation and control circuitry to ensure proper control of the output voltage. The internal current-limit circuitry is also enabled using an external resistor. This resistor can be set to provide the desired current limit. LM3578AN/NOPB devices have the ability to detect over-temperature conditions, and they can be shut down as needed to prevent thermal damage.
The LM3578AN/NOPB uses an internally compensated frequency fold-back feature to automatically lower the operating frequency to extend battery-life in applications utilizing a low-input voltage. This step-down regulator also employs an average current-mode control scheme to utilize fast transient response and also to minimize output voltage ripple. An integrated soft-start feature ensures that the output voltage is regulated gradually as the system comes up.
The LM3578AN/NOPB offers a wide range of output current, while maintaining accurate output voltage regulation over a full load range. The device features a wide-input voltage range, allowing the use of inputs from 1V to 6.5V - accommodating battery powered, as well as DC-to-DC converter/inverter power sources. When used in battery-powered applications, the device provides very low quiescent current, increasing the battery life.
The LM3578AN/NOPB incorporates short-circuit protection and thermal shutdown features to provide protection from hazardous conditions. The device has a low internal PWM frequency of 500kHz, allowing for the use of low-cost components in the output filter circuitry. In addition, the LM3578AN/NOPB is RoHS-compliant and it offers compliance with the most stringent safety and EMC requirements.
