The LM3557SD-2/NOPB is a high-efficiency white LED driver designed specifically to support current mode and pulse width modulation (PWM) brightness control features. It is a Power Management IC (PMIC) dedicated to driving high-brightness LEDs (HBLEDs). Developed by Texas Instruments, the LM3557SD-2/NOPB is designed for high-performance mobile and consumer electronics applications, such as LCD panels, notebook PCs and 50"-plus LCD TVs.

This PMIC is available in an 8-pin LLP package and integrated with built-in safety features, such as inrush current limitation, over-temperature protection, reverse current protection and output voltage protection. Figure 1 is a diagram of LM3557SD-2/NOPB.

Application Field

The LM3557SD-2/NOPB is a general purpose LED driver suited for portable devices with external AC adapters and battery-powered application systems. This PMIC can be used in mobile handsets and other mobile electronics such as digital multimedia cameras and personal digital assistants (PDAs). In addition to this, it can also be integrated into LCD monitors, DC-DC converters and transformers of various power supplies. It is designed to operate on a 2.5V to 5.5V input voltage range.

Working Principle

The LM3557SD-2/NOPB can deliver LED current up to twice its rated LED current. With a two-level LED current control, it features continuous LED current control and pulse width modulation (PWM) LED current control. With current mode control, the LED current is regulated by sense pin voltage, which is determined by the voltage at the current sense resistor. It also offers an analog brightness control by enabling an external current source to be connected between ISET and GND for setting the LED current.

The LM3557SD-2/NOPB includes a wide input voltage range and is able to operate from 2.5V to 5.5V over-voltage protection, which allows the LED current to be maintained within a specified current range even with higher input voltages. The LM3557SD-2/NOPB also includes inrush current limiter, reverse current protection, soft-start feature and thermal shutdown.
