The LM3670MF-2.5EV is an evaluation board featuring an offline SMPS. It is a DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS and can be used to develop and evaluate the performance of the LM3670 regulator chip.
The primary application field of the LM3670MF-2.5EV is for applications requiring a step-down converter with wide input voltage range and high efficiency. Examples are LED lighting, LCD/TFT backlighting, microprocessor/microcontroller power sources, notebook adapter, and LCD monitor backlights. The figure below shows the wide input voltage range of the LM3670MF-2.5EV.
The LM3670MF-2.5EV features a synchronous rectifier, an ELCtronic soft-start circuit, and an adjustable over-current protection circuit. The output voltage can also be adjusted, and can be set from 0.5V to 5V. The input voltage range of input voltage is from 4V to 18V. The output voltage ripple is less than 1 mV RMS, and the system efficiency is more than 94%.
The basic working principle of the LM3670MF-2.5EV is that it takes in DC input voltage through the input bridge rectifier, and then it is regulated by the internal regulators. The input voltage is first converted to a much higher voltage by using a switching regulator. The adjustable output voltage is then generated by using a voltage feedback loop and a series of control logic. The feedback loop is activated by the error amplifier, which compares the output voltage to its reference voltage. The current is then passed through a MOSFET, which switches in an on-off fashion at a very high frequency, in order to reduce the size of the transformer.
