Temperature sensors are an important component in managing the physical environment, as they provide the necessary data to control the temperature, humidity, and other variables. The LM71CISDX/NOPB, which falls within the category of temperature sensors – analog and digital output, is one such sensor.

The LM71CISDX/NOPB is an integrated analog temperature sensor integrated circuit (IC) from Texas Instruments. The LM71CISDX/NOPB is powered with 1.8 V–3.6 V power supply and the nominal quiescent current is 4μA. The quiescent current increases with increasing temperature. It has the feature of default temperature offset. The output is read using the I2C-compatible bus interface. It includes an address pin that can be used for connecting multiple devices to one bus. The I2C bus implements auto-addressing, allowing up to eight devices to be connected in one loop.

The working of LM71CISDX/NOPB is based on a sensing mechanism inspired by Dickson-principle. The temperature reads from the junction of two N-type MOSFETs which are connected to a current source. The current source creates a voltage across the MOSFETs which is proportional to the temperature, and the I2C-bus interface measures this voltage and converts it to digital output signal. The sensing element is designed in such a way that the voltage at the center of the MOSFETs junction is maintained at its optimal level.

The LM71CISDX/NOPB has low noise, wide dynamic range, and fast conversion rate. The noise produced by the device is negligible and its linearity is very low. Consequently, its response time is very fast, with conversion times in the order of microseconds. The dynamic range of the device is also large, spanning -40°C to +85°C.
