Working Principle

The LM76003RNPT buck regulator is based on the standard synchronous buck topology with an internal low side switch and an internal high-side switch. The controller is designed to achieve a constant on-time control loop which is key to providing excellent transient performance. The core of the controller consists of a high performance valley current-mode pulse width modulator (VCM-PWM) and an on-time generator.

The voltage sense input of the VCM-PWM is connected to the output voltage feedback. For the ramp waveform, the output of the VCM-PWM is compared with a ramp wave generated by the on-time generator. The comparator output signals the switching of the device based on the output voltage and the desired load current. When the output voltage drops below the set point, both the high and low side switches are turned on, and the synchronous buck converter operates in the continuous-conduction mode (CCM). This turns on the device until a steady-state condition is achieved.
