LM79L15ACZ/NOPB is a linear voltage regulator with high performance switching characteristics. The device is a three-terminal, negative-voltage regulator available in the through hole TO-220-5L, TO-220FP-5L, and PowerPAK SO-8L packages. The LM79L15ACZ is able to provide output voltages of -5V, -12V and -15V with a maximum output current of 1.5A. The LM79L15ACZ have a fixed output voltage and does not require an external reference voltage. The devices have an adjustment terminal for setting the output voltage by using an external resistor divider network. The device features low dropout voltage, thermal shutdown and short circuit protection. It provides output current limit, short-circuit current limit and thermal shutdown which helps to protect the device and load. Also, the device is able to maintain the output voltage within ±1% accuracy between the temperature range of 0°C to 70°C and it has a maximum output current noise of 0.2μA.LM79L15ACZ/NOPB application fields mainly include personal computers and other electronic systems. These voltage regulators are designed to provide a constant output voltage regardless of load current and input voltage variations. It provides an adjustable output voltage, precisely regulated output voltage and electrical over-temperature protection. The LM79L15ACZ/NOPB working principle is based upon linear regulators with an output transistor connected to the adjustment terminal. The output transistor acts as an buffers to prevent the voltage from rising above the adjustment voltage by controlling the current flowing into the adjustment terminal. The adjustment terminal also acts as a reference for setting the output voltage. When the output voltage is lower than the set regulation voltage, the LM79L15ACZ/NOPB will turn on its output transistor and pull the output voltage up to the set regulation voltage. On the other hand, when the output voltage reaches the set regulation voltage, the output transistor will be switched off and the load current will flow only through the pass element. The LM79L15ACZ/NOPB has a quiescent current of 0.1mA. This current is supplied to the pass element and the output transistor to ensure complete device functionality. The total current supplying the load, referred to as the operating current, is usually much higher than the quiescent current since it is a function of the load current. In conclusion, LM79L15ACZ/NOPB is a three-terminal negative-voltage regulator with a wide range of applications. It has a low dropout voltage, thermal shutdown and short circuit protection.
