The LMC6082 is a classic monolithic Operational Amplifier, suitable for many extensive applications in instrumentation and signal processing, while providing crystal clear performance. This device is highly versatile and can be used in a wide variety of circuits ranging from low power audio pre-amplification to single phase/full-bridge motor control systems.

Application Field

The versatile nature of the LMC6082 makes it ideal for use within audio, Industrial and instrumentation applications. Low power audio frequency amplification and equalising applications are a core use for the IC, where the high slew rate and accuracy of the amplifier make it perfect for producing clear, distortion-free audio. Industrial applications are similarly ideal, due to the device’s ability to handle large input signals and output important operation parameters such as motor temperature and phase shift measurements. The device is also used in instrumentation to amplify small signals in general conditioning and measuring applications. For example, light intensity, temperature and pressure sensing all require accurate operational amplification to translate analogue signals into digital data.

Working Principle

The LMC6082 incorporates two built-in DC-coupled amplifier channels. The device operates from a single supply and has excellent noise performance, outstanding accuracy, high gain-bandwidth product, and low total harmonic distortion (THD). It also has integrated current-limiting and thermal shutdown circuitries to offer added protection to the device under extreme conditions, such as over temperature or over current.

The input circuit, which is common to both channels, is designed to give a high level of linearity whilst maintaining low noise. The current-limiting circuitry ensures that the input stage does not saturate in case of a short-circuit on the output which could lead to damage.

The LMC6082 output drivers have a push-pull architecture which provides high current-driving capability and wide dynamic range, with a full output voltage swing of ± 18 V. The robust output drive stage is able to interface with a wide range of circuit components including motors, inductors and power transistors.

The LMC6082 is temperature-compensated, ensuring a high accuracy of operation over the full temperature range. The device implements a feedback loop that adjusts the gain of the amplifier according to the temperature. This forms an output voltage that results in a linear voltage-output curve for any given set of inputs. This means that the amplifier does not require extra external components to be able to remain stable and accurate over temperature.

Another feature of the LMC6082 is its low power dissipation, resulting from its low quiescent current output stage. This optimizes the power efficiency of the operational amplifier and lowers the cost of the entire circuit. Additionally, the device is provided in a standard chip scale package and is simple to assemble onto a circuit board with minimal wiring.
