This article intends to describe the application field and working principle of the LMC6762AIMX/NOPB, a comparator by Texas Instruments. This type of comparator is also referred to as a linear comparator.
A linear comparator is an electronic device that compares two inputs and produces an output signal based on the relative magnitudes of the two inputs. The linear comparator is almost a universal analog circuit building block and can be used in a wide variety of analog applications. Linear comparators are used in amplitude detection, tone detection, frequency discrimination, pulse generation, synchronization and tracking, filtering, data slicing or chopping, sample-and-hold operations, centering or dynamic offset control, and dual slope integrator triggering. They can also be used to monitor temperature or other physical parameters with a temperature sensing element, such as the LMC6762.
The LMC6762AIMX/NOPB comparator is a low-power, dual, high-speed, single-supply comparator. This device is ideal for current-sensing and process-control applications. It has an offset voltage of 5 mV, a high-speed-response time of 3.2 μs, and a low supply current of 1.5 μA per comparator. The integrated circuit is fully-specified over its operating temperature range, with a -40°C to +85°C temperature range available.
The LMC6762AIMX/NOPB comparator is composed of two independent comparators, each with two inputs and one output. The inputs of the two comparators can be connected or disconnected through a power-on reset (POR) circuit. The two comparators can be operated in either single-channel or dual-channel mode.
Each comparator has two inputs and one output. The noninverting input is referred to as IN+, and the inverting input is referred to as IN-. When the voltage of the IN+ input is greater than the voltage of the IN- input, the output of the comparator is high (equal to Vdd). When the voltage of the IN+ input is less than the voltage of the IN- input, the output of the comparator is low (equal to 0V). The speed of the response of the comparators depends on the amplitude and the rise and fall times of the input signals. The amplitudes of the input signals have an effect on the response speed in both the AC and DC models.
The hysteresis option is directly adjustable with an external resistor, allowing the user to adjust the gain and the speed of the response of the comparator. This enhances the noise immunity of the device in noisy environments. In addition, the LMC6762 features differential inputs, allowing the device to reject common-mode noise from the power supply and external circuitry. This device is also able to reject transients (from either the input or the power supply), thereby preventing false triggering.
The LMC6762AIMX/NOPB is available in two SOIC packages, and is suitable for applications operating from 0 to 5 V single supply voltage. While the power supply voltage is Vdd = 5 V, the device can be operated up to 4.5V and down to 1.5V. It also has an option to power-down the comparator when it is not in use, in order to reduce the power consumption.
