Working Principle
The LMX2531LQ1910E/NOPB operates on a Few Active Components (FAC) concept in order to supply the proper clock signal and ensure each output is in proper frequency. The device consists of five signal sources, which are divided into four frequency stages with reference, fractional-N, VCO and output stages. The device can generate frequencies up to 2.5GHz. This is achieved by allowing users to have frequency control up to 6.4GHz.
The reference stage\'s signal is generated from a stable 32KHz crystal oscillator, which is then connected to a bank of selectable low-pass filters and charge pumps. The output of this stage is fed to the fractional-N stage for further frequency division. This is accomplished by the use of a combination of modulator, D/A converter and Numerically Controlled Oscillator (NCO) structures. The output of this stage is fed to the VCO stage.
The VCO stage consists of an amplifier, voltage-controlled oscillator, loop filter and divider. The signal from the fractional-N stage is used to modulate the VCO frequency. This modulated signal is then passed through the loop filter. The filtered signal is then used as the reference frequency for the divider. The output of the divider stage is the clock signal.
The output stage is used to generate the output clock signals from the divider stage. The output stage consists of a series of dividers and programmable logic. This stage is used to control the output clock frequencies. In addition, the output stage can also be used for jitter attenuation and spread spectrum adjustments.
