The LMX2541/3030 is a high-performance power stabilized, digital phase locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizers, operating from 600MHz to 10GHz with on-chip VCO. The LMX2541/3030 is ideally suited for frequency synthesis, low jitter clock generation, frequency synthesizer applications and phased arrays of transmit and receive patches. The LMX2541/3030 combine an on-chip, wideband VCO, a dual-modulus PFD, a phase detector, and on-chip loop filters. The loop bandwidth is factory programmed and the operating frequency can range from 600MHz to 10GHz. The LMX2541/3030 can also be utilized as a low-noise clock synthesis and amplification source in applications such as high-speed data converters and clock generation systems.The LMX2541/3030 features a low power dual modulus divider, a wideband on-chip VCO and true power-down capabilities. This device allows users to achieve highly precise frequency control and tuning with very low power consumption. The LMX2541/3030 also provides programmable operating frequencies which can be easily adjusted without making physical hardware changes.
Working Principle
The basic working principle of the LMX2541/3030 is that an external reference signal is input to the PLL and compared to the divided internal VCO output. The result of this comparison is used to adjust the operating frequency of the VCO until proper synchronization is achieved.The PLL of LMX2541/3030 consists of several important subcircuits. The most important of which is the dual-modulus prescaler. This is a device which divides the input frequency by either 8 or 32 depending on the state of a latch. Two other important elements of the PLL are the phase detector and frequency detector. The phase detector compares the reference signal to the VCO output and produces an output voltage proportional to the phase difference. This output voltage is then used to adjust the frequency or phase of the VCO throughout the loop. The frequency/phase detector is used to determine the frequency/phase difference between the reference and VCO output. It consists of a reference divider, a phase detector and a loop filter. The reference divider divides the input frequency and the phase detector compares the divided input frequency to the VCO output. The output of the phase detector is filtered by the loop filter to remove any high-frequency variations, providing a steady DC output voltage that is used to adjust the VCO frequency. Once the desired operating frequency has been determined and the loop is closed, the LMX2541/3030 begins to operate in a constant oscillator mode. This is where the output of the VCO and the reference frequencies are continuously compared and the operating frequency is adjusted as necessary to maintain proper synchronization.Applications
