The LMZ10504EVAL/NOPB evaluation board is specifically designed for DC/DC and AC/DC (off-line) SMPS applications. Targeting a wide range of low power applications requiring continuously variable output voltage and current, this evaluation board has been designed to evaluate the performance of the LTC1056P zero-cross PFC controller IC when used with a low power SMPS. The evaluation board allows the user to quickly and easily evaluate the features and performance of the LMZ10504EVAL/NOPB.

The evaluation board employs two identical, independent, power conversion stages: one for DC/DC conversion and one for AC/DC conversion. The input to each stage is either a DC voltage or high line AC, depending on the input source. A switching regulator, the LMZ10504EVAL/NOPB control IC, is used to regulate the output voltage and current. The LMZ10504EVAL/NOPB functions as a combination PFC and connected mode converter, allowing for both active PFC (reactive voltage limb) and induced- mode power conversion. The embedded dual-loop control circuitry provides robustness against line voltage variations and increases the efficiency of the system.

The DC/DC circuit consists of an input bridge rectifier, a bulk input capacitor and two synchronous rectifiers. The LMZ10504EVAL/NOPB provides 200 mV overvoltage protection to the input, which then regulates the output voltage and current via pulse width modulation (PWM). The output voltage is set by an external voltage divider. Current limit can be adjusted via an external resistor.

The AC/DC conversion is similar to the DC/DC conversion, but it requires additional components for zero-cross detection and rectification. A zero-cross detection circuit is included on the board to detect the position of the input voltage waveform with respect to the rising edge of a power transistor. This information is used to trigger a gate drive signal to a synchronous rectifier. The output voltage is also set by an external voltage divider. An external power resistor is used to set the output current limit.

The LMZ10504EVAL/NOPB evaluation board is designed to easily evaluate high efficiency, low power AC/DC and DC/DC SMPS applications. It features a wide input voltage and output voltage range, adjustable current limit, and output short-circuit protection. The board is provided with an off-board output connector and test points to facilitate power measurements and alterations.
