PMIC - Voltage Regulators - Linear
LP2980AIM5-5.0 is a low drop-out linear regulator from Texas Instruments, designed to provide 5.0V of stable output voltage with a minimum dropout voltage of 0.6V at up to 500mA. This makes LP2980AIM5-5.0 an ideal choice for a wide range of portable and fixed applications, including portable audio and wireless applications, where tight regulation and low quiescent current consumption are required.

Working Principle
LP2980AIM5-5.0 is designed to provide a regulated output voltage of 5.0V when the input voltage is between the minimum and maximum specified. The device comprises a P-channel power MOSFET, followed by a regulator comparator and a feedback network. The output voltage is regulated by the error amplifier comparrator and the output voltage is determined by a voltage divider at the VREF pin.
To begin its operation, the Error Amplifier must be enabled. This can be done either by setting the EN pin to be low active, or by using a PNP transistor to control the enable pin with a voltage source. Once the enable pin is activated, the error amplifier will begin to compare the voltage at the FB pin with the voltage at the VREF pin and adjust the output voltage accordingly. When the voltage at the FB pin goes above the voltage at the VREF pin, the error amplifier will reduce the output voltage by switching off the MOSFET and when the voltage at the FB pin is below the voltage at the VREF pin, the error amplifier will increase the output voltage by switching on the MOSFET.
The LP2980AIM5-5.0 is also designed for current limiting, thermal foldback, over-temperature shutdown and current foldback, ensuring that the output voltage is always within the specified range, even when short-circuit or overload conditions occur.
