Introduction

The LP2985IBP-3.0  is a Linear Positive Voltage Regulator integrated circuit (IC) from the LP2985 family of products from Texas Instruments (TI). This regulator IC is designed for low dropout (LDO) voltage regulation and provides excellent line and load regulation and low noise output in a tiny and low profile MSOP (Mini Small Outline Package)  for step down voltage regulation applications on printed circuit boards and other electronic components.

Application Field

The LP2985IBP-3.0 is a very low dropout voltage regulator IC suitable for many demanding applications such as portable electronic devices and embedded systems. Its low dropout voltage provides excellent rippled noise immunity to the device which ensures very clean, stable and low jitter output voltage which is a must in many mobile, battery-powered and low power devices. It is also an ideal choice for tight cost and space constraint designs like portable medical instruments, remote sensors, and other wearables.

More specifically, due to its exceptionally low operating current, excellent transient load response, and adjustable output operation means that this IC is perfect for current limited, battery-powered systems as it can provide stable power output even with input voltage drops as low as 1.1V. It is also ideal for use in mobile electronics such as MP3 players, digital cameras and hand-held GPS devices. This IC is also widely used in energy-saving LED backlighting applications and other space-constrained displays due to its very small MSOP package.

Working Principle

The LP2985IBP-3.0 Linear Positive Voltage Regulator IC is a linear voltage regulator in a pint-sized MSOP-12 package. It incorporates a simple amplifier circuit with an active low spread specturm sinc filter to reduce the unwanted ripple and noise. It also has a neat power down feature for applications with an always-on operating system. The IC uses three discrete output voltages such as 3V, 2.5V, and 1.8V,  which can be adjusted by changing the reference voltage settings on its internal pins. 

The LP2985IBP-3.0 operates in a linear regulation mode. It reduces the input voltage to the output voltage level specified by its reference pins. This is done by controlling the current flowing through the external resistor, called the pass element. The resulting voltage drop across the pass element is the output voltage explicitly set by the reference terminal. This IC has a very low dropout voltage of only 50mV at 1A output current and also a very low quiescent current of 25µA. This helps to reduce the power dissipation and increase the efficiency of the system.

The LP2985IBP-3.0 also has a neat power-down feature. When the ENABLE pin goes below 0.4V, the control section shuts off the pass element and the output voltage drops to zero. This allows the IC to transition into a low power state when not needed and helps in power saving.
