LP3919RL-C/NOPB, designed by Ti(Texas Instruments), is an ultra-low power, general-purpose up converter. This device is designed for providing continuous regulated output voltage from input voltage source as low as 0.9V. It is ideally suited for applications such as RF power amplifiers and light loads, where a high efficiency, small size, and low supply current is required. It includes all necessary components to form the circuit including two high-speed PNP shut down transistors, all necessary protection circuitry, a low-power oscillator and high-voltage current-mode PWM controller.

Application field

LP3919 is primarily used in powering the front-end modules of Telecom base-stations. By regulating 0.9V to 5V, it is suitable for a variety of input/output voltage combinations, featuring fast transient response, low-noise performance, high efficiency and small size. Furthermore, it can be employed in numerous applications requiring regulated voltage from a Li-ion battery or single-cell supply since its quiescent current is only 4.5μA. Both higher efficiency and longer operation time are achieved with its low-power oscillator. Moreover, because of its wide output voltage range (1-7V), it is perfect for powering cellular handsets, RF transceivers and any other applications that have challenging performance requirements.

Working principle

When enabled, the DC-DC convertor starts up and enters into the voltage regulation mode. It begins with the internal oscillator generating a rectangular wave form. The gain of the amplifier is controlled by the duty cycle of this wave form. Then, it is amplified to a certain level and serves as a feedback signal. After comparing with the internal reference voltage, a corresponding pulse is outputted to control the PNP transistor for conducting current through the power inductor. As a result, the output voltage increases. On the other hand, a current sensor is connected in series to detect the output voltage. Once the voltage output reaches the prescribed level, current is cut off and only a small sustaining current flows through the power inductor to maintain the voltage.

In contrast to traditional DC-DC converters, the LP3919 boasts extremely low quiescent current and fast transient response. Its power switching frequency is programmable and also comes with two PNP shut down transistors for input/output control purposes. Thus it can be used to monitor the current on output side, in order to adjust the pulse duty cycle accordingly.
