Linear voltage regulators are of utmost importance for the areas of embedded computing, embedded motor control, and portable power management. Regulators are essential components used to protect and stabilize power supplies by regulating the voltage. One of the many voltage regulator solutions provided is the Texas Instruments LP3982IMMX-1.8.

The LP3982IMMX-1.8 by Texas Instruments is a low-dropout (LDO) linear regulator capable of providing up to 1.8A output current. The device operates over a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 24V and an adjustable output voltage range of 1.2V to 18V. An on-chip enable pin provides enable/disable control for easier voltage sequencing. This device also has an enable/disable function via an I2C/SMBus serial digital interface.

An important feature of the LP3982IMMX-1.8 low dropout voltage regulator is its low quiescent current. It only draws 140μA of quiescent current at 200mA load, so it is extremely efficient for low standby power applications. Additionally, the device supports both output voltage tracking (simultaneous adjustment of the output voltages of multiple devices on one bus) and output current monitoring.

The LP3982IMMX-1.8 voltage regulator is available in both a thermally enhanced 10-lead micro-small-outline-integrated-package (MSOP) and a space-saving 3mm × 3mm Package. The device is also designed to provide noise immunity and protection against overloads, shorts and common-mode transients.

At the heart of the device is the error amplifier, which continuously compares the actual output voltage to a reference voltage. The error amplifier drives the gate of an internal N-channel MOSFET, controlling the voltage applied to the load. The gain of the error amplifier can be adjusted by the resistor divider, which is connected between the output voltage node and the feedback input of the amplifier. Figure 1 below shows the application circuit of the LP3982IMMX-1.8.

The circuit is designed such that when the voltage on the output pin is higher than the reference, the error amplifier will drive the gate of the internal MOSFET Low. This causes the output voltage to drop, and eventually the output voltage will reach the same voltage as the reference voltage applied to the amplifier. This simple feedback loop ensures that the output voltage remains constant regardless of changes in the input voltage or load current since the output voltage is actively regulated.

The LP3982IMMX-1.8 linear voltage regulator by Texas Instruments is an excellent choice for systems with low standby power requirements that require high degree of noise immunity and protection against overloads, shorts and common-mode transients. The device supports both output voltage tracking and output current monitoring, which provides the user with the flexibility to implement specific voltage sequencing or current sensing applications.
