LP5951MF-2.5 Application Field and Working Principle

LP5951MF-2.5 is a low-voltage CMOS linear voltage regulator with a maximum output current of 2.5A. Offered in a range of small, 5- or 8-pin packages, it is ideally suited for applications requiring minimum size and optimal energy efficiency.

To ensure safety, the device contains thermal limiting, soft start, and over-current protection features as well as an overload protect signal to indicate an unsafe condition. The device also features a shutdown mode that provides a logic-controlled disable function.

Typical Working Principle

The LP5951MF-2.5 voltage regulator works on the principle of linear voltage regulation, where the output voltage is directly proportional to the input voltage minus the dropout voltage across the device. The device includes two transistors connected in series at the output, with a clearly defined voltage drop. The transistors act as a voltage source, and the output voltage of this voltage source is regulated by a feedback system. The feedback system provides a control signal to the gate of the transistors, based on the output voltage, to maintain the desired voltage.

At the input of the device, there is an internal series of transistors that forms a current source. This current source, in combination with the output transistors, lets the device maintain the precisely regulated voltage even in the face of varying input and output currents. The internal current source also ensures that output over-current protection and thermal limit can be properly implemented.

The LP5951MF-2.5 voltage regulator also has an internal temperature sensor that monitors the operating temperature of the device. This sensor helps ensure that the device does not overheat and can shut down the device if the temperature reaches a certain limit.
